Charlesmark Hotel: Get a Room

Shop Girl by Kitty Kaufman

There's a small hotel. . . and it's right in the neighborhood. The Charlesmark sits across from the Boston Public Library, ideal for sightseeing, shopping, and easy access to Cambridge and the South End.

Mark Hagopian has an eye for small hotels: Newbury Guest House, Harborside Inn and 15 Beacon are also his projects. He and business partner Charles Hajjar have shaped a hip getaway using a "classic modernist approach with a minimalist flair," he said. "We draw," Hagopian says, "an international hipster crowd that includes athletes, musicians, and well-known names who like the location and ambiance."

The Duffy Design Group has forsaken the usual cookie-cutter hotel design for this setting. Who knew the 1892 building started out as a private residence? Each floor features work by a local artist. Cozy rooms and amenities provide an inviting setting for weekend guests who will find it infinitely more fun than your couch.

Set right on Boylston Street, the lounge serves an "eclectic mix of Thai and American fare." The inn crowd will be right at home with trendy martinis and two computers at the back of the lounge although probably not at the same time.
