Abigail's in Cambridge: Cheers?

Let's Eat by Kitty Kaufman, photos by Dilusha De Tissera

Abigail's bills itself as "Kendall Square's neighborhood restaurant." Which makes us think of Cheers, where everybody knows your name, and where your beer is waiting along with your friends. This is not that place.

We can't get a table outside at lunch time so we are at a high top in the bar. Le bébé expects the bread basket. It is not bread, it is an herbal cake-y something. Judging from her face, she is sad. Me too.

Dilusha orders a hamburger which is billed as a "fresh ground burger, red onion, American cheese, iceberg lettuce, special sauce, soft potato bun." Neither onions nor lettuce made an appearance. The fries are overdone. She is sad. Me too.

I have the poached salmon salad perched on Bibb lettuce with avocado and tomatoes. It is good and oh so diet conscious. Le bébé eats nothing except for a couple of fries and gamely dribbles ice water from a real glass. She likes this a lot. Me too.
